Friday, December 18, 1998 – Underway to Puntarenas, Costa Rica

G’day everyone

After yesterdays dramas we have been blessed with a fabulous day of calm and following seas. While we were anchored over night the winds eased somewhat and by hugging the coastline we had the pleasure of being able to walk in a straight line down the companionways again. The calmer water also gave me a chance to wash off some of the salt that was caked onto every nook and cranny of the boat. Besides the weather change though, little else has happened today.

We are now trying to make as much ground good as we can to get to Costa Rica. By four this morning we will be in Guatemalan waters and hope to pull into Puntarenas by Sunday night or early Monday morning. A two-knot current pushing us back over the last few hours has not been much help though. When STARSHIP gets into port, we will take on our first guest in a while. It is the distinguished marine biologist Dr. John McCosker, with whom we hope to identify some new fish species, dive the seamount between Cocos and Galapagos and have a very joyous festive season and welcome the last year of this century. If you remember, we had the pleasure of being his guests at his workplace, the Ichthyology department of the Steinhart Aquarium in San Francisco. See the October 2nd journal.

Finally, many of you have written very positive comments about our digital pictures. A few days ago Michael put together a "best of" web page. This contains 32 of the best images from the San Diego to Zihuatenejo leg. Click here!  Late last night I spent over an hour looking at all the pictures and reflecting over the memories....

Regards
