Wednesday, May 5, 1999  -  80 miles north of the Equator enroute to Salinopolis, Brazil

Hi there,

Today was a pretty quiet day on the STARSHIP. The higher swells of last night have calmed down to a rather gentle rolling by this morning. Just after lunch, even the rain started to ease up and the overcast sky let through a few rays of sunshine. If we can keep up our speed, we are supposed to arrive in Salinopolis by lunch time tomorrow.

Certainly a nice contrast to yesterdays grim picture.  Sunset at 1° N

Earlier on today, on my watch, I saw my first boat since our departure from French Guiana and soon after we found ourselves admits several fishing boats as well as 'Shrimpers' reeling in their catch. We are also getting closer and closer to the equator, which is now only 80 miles away. The crew is already trying to plan a little celebration for the crossing, but then again our ETA for the equator is approximately 4 AM, so we will see who is actually going to be awake for it.

We will let you know tomorrow how it all turned out.

Until then,

Monica

Your STARSHIP crew
